New Orleans, Then and Now, constituted basically of an overview of New Orleans jazz history (Irvin Mayfield and the NOJO). The program is a blend of "traditional jazz, blues,
swing and spirituals," which range from Duke Ellingtons "Take the A Train" to Mayfields own steamy compositions, all beautifully rendered by the 16-piece ensemble (Cable). The members of the
NOJO were not only exemplary musicians, but they were also entertaining a performers, as they joked both with Mayfield and the audience throughout the concert (NOJO heats up DPAC). Band
director and composer, as well as lead trumpeter, Mayfield created the non-profit orchestra in 2002 in order to present the traditions of New Orleans musical culture. Today, the NOJO tours
the country not only to present incredible music, but also as ambassadors of their hurricane-devastated city (NOJO heats up DPAC). Mayfield introduced each song with a personal conversation
with the audience, which explained the context for the piece. Each member of the orchestra was featured in a solo at some point in the evening. During these performances, the
musicians fellow players gave quiet murmurs of approval or even whooped their appreciation at especially brilliant improvisation (NOJO heats up DPAC). As this suggests, there was not a hint of
formality to the evening. Rather, the atmosphere reflected not only the consummate musicianship of these artists, but also their deep love for the music they create. A particularly heartfelt
