part of a larger and powerful whole it appears as though their traditions and ceremonies are often somewhat vague and allusive in relationship to certain things, changing and altering from
one research source to another. However, there is also a great sense of understanding that many of all native tribes shared some elements, one of the most important relating to
dreams and visions. This is one of the most important elements of the transition from boyhood to manhood as well. The following paper examines the ceremonies or traditions associated with
the Iroquois and going from boy to man. Iroquois and Boys Coming of Age The Iroquois, or Mohawk, people seem to have no real solid ritual involving coming
of age. There are numerous tribes around the world where young boys of a particular age undergo many different activities and challenges and ceremonies, but being that this particular tribe
is quite diverse and part of a larger whole it appears as though the ceremonies are more involved with daily life and growing rather than one simple ceremony that will
make a boy a man. There is the dream quest, or the vision quest, which will be discussed, but in many cases it seems that simply growing into a good
hunter and a brave individual is the most important element of a boy becoming a man. Demonstrating that a person is brave and able to do the things that
men do is a very important part of becoming a man, and it seems that only when a boy has demonstrated such skills will he likely go on a vision
or a dream quest. He must, in other words, demonstrate he is ready for the responsibilities of being a man, acting like a man, and being brave like a man.
