individuals who are put into Hell. They are ignorant of their past crimes to a great extent, and they are ignorant people in general. The story is, as noted, thought
provoking and offers the viewer/reader a powerful sense of irony coming from Sartre. The following paper examines some of the irony seen in this particular play. Irony in
No Exit by Sartre In the beginning of the play the three individuals seem relatively normal and innocent. They are simply three individuals who are led into a room where
they must stay together. The viewer/reader begins to understand they are in Hell and there are many powerful reasons for them being exactly where they are. The viewer/reader, in fact,
knows more than the players for they can see how the individuals are lying or making their lives seem more righteous than they were. This sort of stance adds to
the irony for the reader/viewer has more knowledge without even knowing it. One of the most ironic foundations of the story involves the fact that these three people are
in Hell. Hell is envisioned as a place of torture and pain, fire and agony. But, here these people are simply put in a room together, seemingly randomly. One of
the characters, in fact, notes that they are there without thought on the part of whoever put them together as they state, it is "A pure fluke" (Sartre 14). These
characters are ignorantly assuming that there is no reason for them to be together, but the truth is that they are there to irritate the "hell" out of each other.
