can be accomplished."3 A principal factor in the ways that the Irish influenced American culture evolves from the fact that the Irish, while technically a free people, lived for centuries
as a "conquered people" under British domination.4 The British controlled their "politics, economics and religious life."5 This gave the Irish a strong identity, which involved a sense of community cohesion
that proved invaluable in organizing and achieving goals. Because of their own antagonism towards the English, the sympathies of the Irish people were largely with the colonies at the time
of the American Revolution.6 A shared background of British domination instilled in immigrant Irish admiration for American republican ideals and this perspective aided the process of their assimilation into American
society, so much so that the Irish ultimately became "more American than the Americans in their appreciation for the blessing of civic freedom."7 The influence of Irish Americans on American
history has been extensive. Nineteenth Presidents lay claim to Irish ancestry. It has been estimated that between one-third and one-half of the American troops that found in the Revolutionary War
