a sort of "narrative history." Its not strictly history, because she could not possibly know some of the things she writes, such as how the Lees reacted in given situations;
for instance, she writes that when Lee surrendered at Appomattox and came home, his wife was waiting, and that she watched "with eyes blurred by tears" as he took off
his sword and put it away (Vinton, 1952, p. 175). This is probably exactly what happened, but Vinton actually has no way of knowing that for certain (unless she read
an eye-witness account, which she doesnt mention). Therefore, the most logical explanation is that this is how she envisions the scene as having taken place. This means the book isnt
a true history, but a fictional work that is grounded in history, which is quite a different thing. To her credit, she does call it the "story" of Robert E.
Lee, not the "history" of Robert E. Lee. She tells her story in linear fashion, starting with Lee as a boy and following him through his life, from his school
years to his time at West Point to his career in the U.S. Army to his post as the leader of the Army of Northern Virginia, and finally to the
last years after the Civil War (Vinton, 1952). Young readers who want a brief, simply written, one-dimensional overview of Lee and his life will find this book adequate. However, its
only an introduction; its far too simplistic to give any real insight into Lees character and motivation. That is probably its greatest weakness. Vintons version of Lee is little less
than a saint. He never loses his temper-and yet many sources tell us that Robert E. Lee had a vicious temper that he tried hard to control. He is always
