fear than conviction. Although part of her believes it necessary, she resents the war for the loss of her son, making her afraid for her other children, and for
making her the outlet for her husbands anger and depression. Her elder son is fighting with him now, and her eldest daughter is operating with a resistance group in
a neighboring town. Madeleine gathers her younger children and bastard grandchild around her, and quietly tells them to take water, food and clothing to the cellar. She knows
that a determined soldier would find them, but if they are lucky, they might survive the day. Much is devoted in literature and in history books
to the honor and trauma of war in respect to its male participants. However, strong arguments have been made that women suffer the most from war. During times
of war, it has been recorded that entire villages of women and children have been wiped out. Considered the spoils of war for millennia, women and girls are generally
tortured in a sexual manner before being killed outright or dying from the savagery inflicted upon them (Anonymous, 1996; Murray, 1996, p. 119). Women also suffer from the long-term
effects of war: loss of family, loss of dignity and status, and the abuses that can result from post-traumatic war syndrome or general frustration and helplessness experienced by family
