In August 1990 Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein made a move that would forever alter Iraqs relationship with the rest of the world. That move was his invasion of the
neighboring Arab country of Kuwait. Although he was criticized heavily by most of the world, Saddam justified this invasion in a number of ways. The most predominant of
these justifications revolved around Iraqs inability to repay the Kuwaiti debts it had incurred during the Iraq-Iran war and Saddams resentment of the fact that Kuwait refused to waive those
debts. Additional justifications revolved around Saddams consternation over Kuwait effectively stealing oil from Iraq via slant drilling and Kuwaits control of the flow of oil and its prices in
general. Perhaps even more importantly was the fact that in Iraqs eyes Kuwait was rightfully part of Iraq and had been unjustly severed from the country during the Anglo-Ottoman
Convention of 1913. Both Iraq and Kuwait are oil producing nations. The economies of both nations, in fact, are based primarily on
the fact that they each hold vast oil reserves that are in high demand in the rest of the world. The Persian Gulf countries as a whole in fact
