world were well-aware of Saddams oppressive regime that violated human rights at will. Tales of mutilation and torture comparable to that which took place during the time Adolf Hitlers
Nazis controlled Germany had been circulating for years. Initially, American support for the war effort was high because the government depicted it as a classic showdown between good (the U.S.)
and evil (Saddam/Iraq). However, this initial solid public support quickly fragmented as Americans and most of the world began questioning what purpose this war actually served. Over five
years after this conflict began the consensus is that despite President George W. Bushs repeated assurances to the contrary, the Iraq war was not justified. First, how can any aggressive
and unprovoked military attack ever be justified? The allies portrayed themselves as liberators that would free the Iraqi people from Saddam Husseins flagrant human rights abuses. In fact, the
initial attack was dubbed Operation Iraqi Freedom. However, human rights have not improved since the war began. If anything, they have remained either the same as before Saddam
was removed from power or further deteriorated. Suicide bombings killing innocent Iraqi civilians have become commonplace and reports of U.S. soldiers raping Iraqi women have surfaced. The de
facto government the allies installed is no more effective or humane than the reign it replaced. In fact if anything, abuses are more widespread than they were before Saddam
