According to Vivien Sirotkin, General manager of The Oxford Hotel, the most essential skills for a hotel general manager are: "planning, communication, coordination, marketing, financial analysis and people management - as are motivation and customer care" (Tobin and Beckett, 2005). My background includes these skills. Hotel managers are responsible for a vast array of diverse tasks, all of which must be performed well if the business is going to be both profitable and efficient (Hotel Management Colleges and Universities, 2006). In smaller hotels, the general manager will likely perform many of these tasks; in large hotels, the general manager will have a staff to share managerial duties (Hotel Management Colleges and Universities, 2006). General managers have the overall responsibility for the operation of the hotel (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). They set the rates for rooms, allocate funds to the different departments, approve expenditures, and ensure "expected standards for guest service, decor, housekeeping, food quality, and banquet operations" (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). All day-to-day operations are under the general manager although, as mentioned, large hotels may have food and beverage managers, housekeeping managers or directors, sales and marketing managers, front office managers, assistant managers, special events managers, human resource managers, finance directors, or whatever is needed for that particular hotel (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). At least one manager must be on duty 24 hours (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006). The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2006) comments that hotel managers will work long hours, often nights and weekends.
