Mankinds history and prehistory is replete with the invention of extremely diverse tools, devices, and other aspects of the various cultures that evolved. While
some of these inventions ultimately died out in their use, others are still used today. Excellent examples are the catapult of Medieval times, dental fillings which can be traced
back to prehistory via the archaeological record, and the outrigger canoes of the Pacific Island cultures. Each of these inventions evolved at distinct times and served distinct uses.
Each is still used in a more evolved form today. The outrigger canoe of the Pacific Islands, as simplistic
as it may be perceived by some, is one of the most impressive technological accomplishments of human culture. Historically, the outrigger canoe was important in the material culture of
many of the peoples that lived in the Pacific Islands. It is of particular interest in the manner that even today it continues to reflect the values, beliefs, and
priorities of the Marshall Islanders. Traditionally these canoes were made of breadfruit logs using only the most primitive of tools, tools like broken coral for drilling and sharpened clam
