and its impact on society. Invention of the Internet The Internet "is a worldwide network of thousands of computers and computer networks. It is a public, voluntary, and cooperative effort
between the connected institutions and is not owned or operated by any single organization" (Internet, 2006). Information is transmitted over the Internet using "protocols"; these protocols, which are referred to
as the "Internet and Transmission Control Protocols" were developed by Vinton Cerf, a computer scientist, in 1973 (Internet, 2006). His work was "part of a project sponsored by the United
States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)" (Internet, 2006). Thus, the Internet "began as a computer network of ARPA," (known as ARPAnet) that linked several universities and research
laboratories in the U.S. (Internet, 2006). The World Wide Web was invented much later: it was "developed in 1989 by English computer scientist Timothy Berners-Lee for the European Organization for
Nuclear Research (CERN)" (Internet, 2006). CERN has since gone on to win fame as one of the settings for Dan Browns novel Angels and Demons (Brown is the author of
The DaVinci Code). The Internet was designed in 1973 and the design was published in 1974 (Internet, 2006). After that, "about 10 years of hard work" took place before
the Internet was unveiled in 1983 (Internet, 2006). Prior to the start-up, "a number of demonstrations were made of the technology - such as the first three-network interconnection demonstrated in
November 1977 linking SATNET, PRNET and ARPANET in a path leading from Menlo Park, CA to University College London and back to USC/ISI in Marina del Rey, CA" (Internet, 2006).
Once the technology was proven to work, the Net was up and running. History of the Internet The history of the Internet is closely linked with the Defense Advanced Research
