many who would strongly, and rightly, argue that without the powerful success of the Invasion of Normandy the Second World War would have gone very differently, and perhaps likely far more negatively. In essence, the Invasion of Normandy or D-Day ultimately stands as the beginning of the end of WWII. It was a battle that altered the direction of the war and a battle that saw the loss of many soldiers. As one author notes, "More than 60 years later, the Normandy Invasion, or D-Day, remains the largest seaborne invasion in history, involving nearly three million troops crossing the English Channel from England to Normandy in occupied France."1 The following paper provides an overview of this historical event. D-Day When WWII began Germany essentially invaded Poland which pushed Canada, France, and Great Britain to declare war on Germany.2 By the early part of 1940 Germany was well prepared and eager to invade France and although France was being supported by British troops the Germans succeeded in defeating the Allies at the time.3 By most accounts the German forces were formidable and were increasingly dangerous, seemingly taking more and more areas under their control. By the time 1944 came around the United States, and other nations, were clearly involved and it was deemed that Normandy beach would be a very powerful location as it related to putting an end to German power and control.4 Another author notes that planning the events also included creating particular bases of operation.
