emotional intent behind facial expressions in people from radically diverse cultures; however, emerging evidence suggests that this is not the case and that the interpretation of emotions via facial expression
is not a universal trait at all, but rather a phenomenon that is augmented by culturally inclined differences in attention, focus, and perception of context-dependent events. In the study, individual
participants from both American and Japanese cultural backgrounds will be asked to interpret the facial expression of samples both in isolation and in the context of a crowd, as well
as gauged for recognition of images in a similar isolated and crowded context, in order to determine whether or not cultural background facilitates a significant difference in how people perceive
emotion based on social context. In order to carry out such a study, however, it is first necessary to examine the theoretical background behind the study, observe those experiments which
came before, and recognize their shortcomings; only then can a meaningful experimental design be arranged. One early study on the topic of particular note is a study by Sylvan
Tomkins which emphasized the universality of facial expressions and their interpretation in regards to emotional intent. The study utilized participants from North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe, and
asked them to determine the emotional intent of faces from their own and other cultural backgrounds; far and away, the results showed that individuals from any culture could reliably interpret
the facial expressions of another culture, suggesting that expression of emotions via the face follows a universal biological pattern. The limitation of this study is that many scientists were tempted
