relationship. The underlying assumption is that those who require help can adjust and change and the helper will aid the client in realising that change. The method of contact
may vary; this could include a professional referral, a self referral or mandated attendance, such as the result of a court order. Client eligibility will also need to be
assessed and if necessary redirected after initial engagement. The way the relationship develops will be impacted on the nature of the helper and the agency under which they work;
for example there will be different needs and issues reflecting if the client is in hospital or receiving counselling for sexual abuse. However there are a number of universal skills
and that need to be demonstrated during the engagement in order to build trust. Trust is necessary as the first time a client speaks with a potential counsellor they are
a stranger and relevant discussion may be very personal. Required skills include the ability to demonstrate respect, including respect for culture, and empathy as well as good communication and interpretation
skills. These may include accurate interpretation of the clients of verbal and non verbal communication and relevant theories that are universal focus on problem solving solution based approaches. The counsellor
should also communicate authenticity. Concerns and barriers to engagement and the development of trust may include the perceptions of the counselling service, the medical model dominance, time and resource
constraints on the counsellor and fears of lack of privacy. Positive engagement to build trust at the beginning of the helping relationship is necessary and while the focus is
on communications, aspect such as dress and cultural consideration such as offering refreshments and management of physical surroundings and positioning should also be considered to place the client at ease.
