one that has created a disturbing notion that the government can effectively take over peoples lives. It is something not unlike Big Brother in the infamous Orwellian tale called 1984.
One the other hand, people do not see the Act as all that invasive and even so, they claim that it is necessary. McCullagh (2001) explains that the measure
has bipartisan support and it is something that allows the installation of what is called a Carnivore surveillance system in most any venue; previously, there were a great deal of
restrictions on its use. The purpose of the act is as follows: "To enhance the capability of the United States to deter, prevent, and thwart domestic and international act
of terrorism against United States nationals and interests" ("Excerpts," 2004). The essential problem at hand is that to some extent this new measure impinges on the rights of individuals.
Limiting freedom is something that has been aligned most closely with Democrats, although to an extent Republicans do support measures that limit freedom. Each party has traditionally done this in
different ways. To help illustrate this point, it should be noted that the Libertarian party does support everything that limits government intervention from legalizing drugs to allowing prostitution. The party
is even neutral when it comes to international politics. Hence, it is a party that prefers the U.S. to keep to itself and stay out of international affairs. It is
also a party that supports small government. Its ideology is hinged on the idea that people should be allowed to do what they like. Of course, while Republicans to a
great extent want small government, lower taxation, less government interference, a reduced amount of DYFS interventions and so forth, they do support interference when it comes to social issues or
