1. Introduction Englewood Security Ltd is a UK based company operating principally in the east of the country with some
operations expanding into the north. Established in 1987 the firm provides a range of security services, with many staff working in off site, client based locations. The aim of this
paper is to look at the way in which the firm may be able to improve operations or add value to the organization with the use of a improved performance
appraisal scheme. 1.1 Reason for the Project The operation is a small to medium sized enterprise with 53 full time employees, and in
line with may other SMEs, the firm faces challenges as a result of harsh economic conditions as well as the usual pressures associated with a business where smaller firms are
competing against much larger firm who are able to gain economies of scope and scale. A key aspect of any firms operations are the way it is able to leverage
human resources including issues such as labour, commitment and the use of intellectual capital (Grant, 2004). The ability to pursue strategies which allow for the strategic use of employees and
to maximise productivity which may also be the source of competitive advantage would be advantageous (Mintzberg et al, 2008; 2003). However, even where not a source of competitive advantages the
