This 20 page paper considers how a company may increase the productivity and performance of their staff with the use of intrinsic motivation. The paper looks at the underlying theory, comparing ideas such as economic man as advocated by Adam Smith and Frederick Winslow Taylor with social man and the motivational theories of commentators such as Mayo, Maslow and Herzberg. wish to cite examples of none motivated staff, such as indicated by the recent strike by British Airways staff at Heathrow. The productivity will occur directly through increased effort and
direct input, however, aspects such as loyalty will also reap rewards, with lower staff turnover and increased efforts over and above a job description, as seen with committed emotional labour.
It is with motivated employees that there will also be positive and valuable psychological contract (Rousseau, 1995). The key for employers is how to motivate employees to this level with
the range of tools that are available to them. Individuals may be motivated by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. To understand how intrinsic factors can motivate there is a need
to understand the other side of the equation, looking at what extrinsic factors are, who they work and the value the may or may not have in terms of motivation.
Intrinsic motivation must them look to these shortfalls. In this paper we will consider a small manufacturing company where engineering parts are made. The company employees in the region
of 150 staff and runs two shifts, one starting in the early morning, one starting later in the afternoon, shutting down at night. As a family run firm, there is
not a great deal of spare money left over which can be used for motivation development. The environment in which the firm operates is one that is a specialist area,
but also competitive. The need to cut costs is always present, and the staff have traditionally been paid with the minimum wages and a bonus based on overall productivity. It
