it into two sections, 1919 - 1929 where the period begins with the return of soldiers from the war and the Winnipeg strike. The second period is between 1929 -
1939 when the Canadian great depression occurs, increasing unemployment levels and seeing the occurrence of a brain drain, as skilled and unskilled workers look for work elsewhere. To undersrand
the events of 1919 we need to look at the run up to this period. In was in 1914 when Canada joined the First World War. More than 25,000 volunteers
went to the aid of Britain, with the belief the war would be over quickly and they would be able to return home (Steedman, 1998). Many hoped that the war
would come to a end quickly, and for those in Canada, on a different content to the war which had been brewing in Europe for many year, believed their involvement
would be very limited. However, war is a drain on any nation, and whilst the war was waged in Europe, Canada was called upon for practical support creating economic changes.
There was the creation of a number of new industries to keep the allies supplied with munitions as well as food and other supplies needed for overseas soldiers. The
agricultural economy also changed as well as the manufacturing base, farmers were called on to produce more food for the soldiers, many farms saw increases of four times their pre
war levels. There was also an increased rile played by women, entering the workforce to help boost the production called for and the absence of men fighting the war.
There is the total transformation of the economy, the demand for other goods also increased. In Europe all producing was down, as such the Canadian goods were in high demand
