but there is a lack of adequate nutrition and medical care. When asked when the last time she was at her doctors office, she explains that it was a year
and a half ago for bronchitis. In interviewing the woman, she reveals that as a child, she was well cared for but when she was an adolescent, both parents were
killed in a car accident and she went to live with an aunt who was mentally ill. She was sexually abused by the aunts boyfriend. In examining Eriksons stages,
as presented in the Craven & Hirnle text (2003), it is clear that when she goes through the infant, preschool and school age stages, she has few conflicts, but adolescence
is replete with turmoil. While tumultuous for many teens, this time of life is especially troubling for the woman interviewed. She explains that she went on to marry, but was
soon thereafter divorced. One might speculate that the trauma which occurred during adolescence affected her in young and middle adulthood. In respect to Eriksons stages, the older adult is in
the last stage of life where one accomplishes wisdom and an understanding of ones position in society (Craven & Hirnle). As an older individual, this woman does reflect on the
past and has some regrets, but some optimistic comments are made as well. In evaluating this woman with the use of Gordons functional health patterns, things become clearer.
The eleven health patterns, according to Gordon, are health perception and management, nutrition and metabolism, activity and exercise, elimination, cognition and perception, sleep and rest, self-perception and self-concept, coping and
stress management, roles and relationships, sexuality and reproduction, and values and beliefs (OConnell & Bare, 2005). For this case study, it seems that the woman is lethargic and rarely exercises.
