begin by providing a brief introduction to the person who is being interviewed, which serves to introduce this person to the reader. Elizabeth is 87 and lives in an assisted living facility, as she has a little trouble getting around and tends to forget to take her various medications. She was born in 1920 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, so when World War II began she was 21. She worked as a secretary in the billing department of a local department store. As she was single, she lived at home with her mother and sister. The interview began by asking Elizabeth, "What was life like during World War II?" She responded, "Oh, it was quite different. It was difficult. I guess I cried every day-about something, the loss of a battle, the death of a man from our neighborhood. Things like that. But it was also a good time in that everyone-literally, everyone-we were all united. I was lucky in that my father was older, too old to be drafted, and I had no brothers or even any male cousins. But plenty of my friends from high school were drafted, many were killed in combat. A great many of my girlfriends married their high school sweethearts before they were shipped out. You didnt know what the future might bring, or if they would survive. "Did you get married during the war?" I asked. "No, I didnt. I waited and Im glad I did. Marrying young and in a hurry, and then being separated for years. It was hard on marriages. Some girls got the rather strange idea that they could prove their patriotism by having sex with soldiers.
