The following paper provides a hypothetical interview, and a tutorial discussion of such, as it relates to a grandmothers first date in 1940 when she was 16 years old. Grandmothers Date Myrtle Juliette Cutherbert was a young woman from a fairly established family in the community. Her father owned a large construction business and lumber yard and they essentially built many of the historic buildings now seen in the town. Myrtle tells us that she was spoiled, but also very sheltered in those days. It was 1940 and the country had recently come out of the Great Depression and her parents were worried she may fall in love with a drifter or someone beneath her socially. Myrtle says that she was quite popular at school and boys would often ask her out, but she would always have to tell them no because she was not old enough. Then she finally turned 16, the age when she could go on a date if her parents knew the boy and approved. She says that the boy she had liked for many years, Earl Levis Boals, was the boy who asked her out when she was 16. His family was not very wealthy, but Myrtles parents knew the family from church and from her fathers business. They agreed because the family was a good family. Earl picked Myrtle up at her house, coming inside to talk to Myrtles father as was expected in those days. The plan was to go to a local picnic that the school was putting on, down at a lake.
