Impact of critical care health care provision on the population Dr. Lapointe indicated that he felt that the "impact of critical health care provision on the population is about
the service and quality of care we provide for them." He went on to explain that the public holds high expectations relative to critical care provision. An aspect of this
care is the assistance provided by technology. Lapointe commented, "I cannot imagine having a critical are unit without technology." In order to properly operate this technology, the staff, according to
Lapointe, is "required to be qualified and well-trained to face the day-to-day challenges of a critical care patient." While only a small portion of the overall population will require critical
care, the population, as a whole, requires that this technology and expertise should be available. Lapointe commented, "the cost of having the facility is very high, but necessary." Thomason (2006)
defines critical care nursing quite simply by pointing out that these are the nurses who provide care for the most seriously ill patients in a hospital. Thomason also verifies that
the specialized nursing care involved in critical care requires extensive customized training for nurses working within this clinical environment. Therefore, recruitment and retention of intensive care unit (ICU) nurses is
a top priority for many hospitals; however, the competition among hospitals for these nurses is intense (Thomason, 2006). Problems and concerns facing critical care nursing today One of the
