James Paras - the immigration judge made his grandfather shorten it from Paraskakis - and he runs the Kumon Math and Reading Center. My family has known James Paras for
more than six years now, and weve become friends. Even so, I realized I didnt know much about him, so the assignment to interview him came as a pleasant surprised
and a chance to find out more about this man of contrasts. James Paras was born in Modesto, California, and is now in his early 40s. He owns the
Kumon Math and Reading Center there, and teaches as well. Although my interactions with him have been pleasant, my request for an interview took him by surprised and resulted in
a flurry of questions: Was I going to ask anything personal? What kind of essay was I writing? How specific was I going to be? Despite what was obviously some
uneasiness on his part, he agreed to talk to me with no conditions attached. His attire for the interview was the same as it usually is: dress shirt, sweater,
khaki pants and dress shoes; he saves shorts and tennis shoes for the weekend. Dressing formally as he does gives a very definite impression that James takes his job as
a teacher seriously, and that he enjoys presenting a fairly formal appearance. When I asked him why he dressed so formally he replied, "I dress like this so the people
