Interventions Recent research contends that the nations school lunch program is actually "exacerbates" the child obesity
epidemic we are facing. Helping the county schools develop a healthier school lunch program is logically one of the first interventional programs that should occur. Working hand-in-hand with
the Alabama Cooperative Extension, community nurses can make a difference in this regard. The schools are open to ideas about how to achieve a healthy menu. The major
hurdle they have to overcome is cost. The County Extension Service should serve as an ally in this quest because it already has many of the resources in place.
It has a compendium of the retail food store outlets and wholesale food outlets. The Extension also has many agricultural contacts that will be an asset to getting
healthier food into the schools. A second focus in the community nurses quest to address the problem of childhood obesity in their county
is developing safe recreational options. Children in our county dont have such outlets at present and this is a definite contributor to the childhood obesity problem. For children
to be able to utilize these options they must be close to their home. The key is developing programs at the schools themselves that will bring children back after
