Introduction Cancer is one of the most prevalent life threatening conditions that affecting men and women. Much research has been devoted
to preventing, detecting, and treating the various forms of cancer. The primary focus has been on mainstream clinical intervention in fighting this disease. In terms of breast cancer,
mammography remains the tool of choice in detecting the condition and surgical removal is most often paired with aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy followed up by a rigid pharmacological regime.
Radiology and this treatment regime are key factors in most of oncology in fact. One of the first steps in addressing the toll of breast cancer in
particularly getting women into radiological centers for annual screening. Aggressive recruitment strategies have a proven value in this task. Researchers have found, however, that women of lower socioeconomic
class (particularly African American women) are less likely to pursue screening than are other women. This is due to a number of reasons ranging from the lack of adequate
healthcare insurance, to misguided beliefs about their susceptibility to cancer and/or the value of screening, to a reluctance to interact with health care professionals and systems because of previous negative
experiences. The literature emphasizes that all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status, greatly benefit from annual screening. Diagnosis if the first step in treatment. Furthermore, establishing a
womans baseline is a critical component of later evaluating the progression/remission of the cancer. Additionally, more researchers are coming to the forefront with assertions that collaborative breast health interventions
have tremendous value in the treatment of breast cancer. These interventions are designed to educate women about the disease and the various options that are available to them.
