For example, aggressive, bullying children present a specific challenge to school personnel, inasmuch as their behavior must be maintained in such a way that does not inadvertently antagonize the situation. Teachers are often faced with the grim reality that nothing they say or do will ultimately help diffuse the childs aggressive behavior toward his or her classmates if the school is not prepared to step in and take action. Indeed, school intervention is essential if the bullying child is going to be properly assimilated into society. Successfully achieving this goal means the implementation of behavior therapy as a means by which to address and maintain the aggressive childs interaction. According to Sayger et al (1993), it is imperative for the student to acquire skills for appropriate social behavior, and the teacher is one of several sources from where this instruction can be taught. By applying behavior therapy, it encourages the aggressive child to become "more cohesive and expressive" (Sayger et al, 1993, p. 393), traits that are indicative to a normally responding student. The protection of minors, another area in which intervention is quite prevalent, became a significant point of convergence during the last half of the twentieth century, inasmuch as a great deal of attention was placed upon this conscious move from child protection to child rights, a shift in Europe, for example, that owes much to the intervention of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) - specifically articles five and ...
