Consider the scenario: US intelligence uncovered a plot to attack the country in a multi-pronged, synchronized attack assured of claiming thousands of lives at minimum. Authorities identified four pilot-trained terrorists they were nearly certain would be involved in the attacks and were able to capture one of them 48 hours before the assigned hour that the attacks would begin. The suspect is not an American citizen, and therefore not afforded all of the guarantees of the Constitution. But the man is stoic. His hatred of America and all that it stands for fills his every thought, it drives every action. The man has no purpose in life aside from taking part in a "holy war" against the "decadent" United States and the fact that it dares allow its people to be free and to think for themselves. How should the mans interrogation progress? Should it be polite and reserved in the hopes that the man will somehow "come to his senses" and reveal the details of the planned attacks so that they can be averted? Or should interrogators pull out all stops, employ some of the tactics that several of them were personally subjected to in the waning days of Vietnam? Or should interrogators acknowledge above all that this single individual is a human being and therefore deserving of the treatment consistent with basic human rights? Easy Decision The personal feelings and opinions of those involved carry no weight in arriving at a decision.
