are becoming more and more common. Those that look at interracial relationships in a negative light must ultimately come to the conclusion that these types of relationships must be
accepted if we are to interact with others. Regardless of how much they stare, regardless of how much they whisper; interracial relationships will continue. The problem, of course,
comes in convincing the critics that interracial relationships are not blights on society. Instead, they are not only morally permissible they are a necessary component of modern civilization.
For centuries it has been the tendency in many regions to frown on interracial relationships. Marriage between those of different races
was often even prohibited by law (Takaki 67, Moran 170). Indeed, even sexual relations between two races could result in severe physical punishment (Moran 170). There are reasons for
this strict separationist attitude that developed over history. Our cultures, after all, were formed largely on the basis of race. Race was an easily identifiable characteristic to sort out
who was of your culture, your religion, even who spoke your language and who did not. Today, however, race no longer serves as a cultural delineator.
Today we live in a multicultural society. People of all colors share religious affiliation, they share languages, and even lifeways. You can
no longer tell an AmerIndian, for example, by the presence of beads and feathers. You can no longer tell an African by the presence of a primitive musical instrument.
We all dress basically alike. We live in similar house, drive similar cars, and have similar jobs. Even our acceptance of interracial relationships is increasing. In
