Hughes became a celebrated poet of the Harlem Renaissance. They were great friends, corresponding for forty years (Edwards & Vitale, 2001). Elizabeth Keckly, a former black slave and dressmaker, helped
spare ex-First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln from poverty and starvation (Rotella, 2003, 64). Chris Rice befriended black activist Spenser Perkins in the 1980s. At first enemies, they ended up sharing
a dream (Housely, 2003, 39). And finally, Bobby Harris (2002) writes that, against the popular grain, he befriended a white friend at an inner city high school and their friendship
continues today. These are just a few examples of interracial friendships through history and what it means to be friends in the face
of opposition. These lasting friendships were built on sharing ideas and similar tastes, but also concern and support for the other. The overriding claim
to attraction in both friendships and interracial marriages is common interests. In the case of Bobby Harris and his friend, for example, they shared a love of rock and roll
music in a time when hip hop and rap were the most popular forms of music on high school campuses. This brought them close initially, then they found other common
interests, including goals for college. Close friendships can be made from a contentious relationship, as in the case of Christian charity workers Chris
Rice and Spenser Perkins. When Perkins took a summer off from college and volunteered with the Christian Community Development Association of which Rice was in charge. Rice was offended that
white people wanted to assist Blacks living in poverty, but thats exactly why Perkins had volunteered. The two slowly became friends through their work together, over only one summer. This
