in each case, the individuals involved are led toward a full comprehension of the spiritual realm through their contact with the Savior. The first story concerns a Samaritan woman who is, at first, completely closed to the words of Jesus. At first, the womans reactions stem from her erroneous preconceptions based on a prior history of receiving scorn from other Jews because of her origin as a Samaritan. However, as Jesus talks, he skillfully leads her toward the truth, opening her heart and inspiring her to the point that she leaves her water jug (the whole point of coming to the well) and runs to tell others of Jesus presence in this region. The second story concerns the army officer who asks for Jesus to come to the aid of his dying son. As is pointed out in John, this Gentile is already very close to belief, as he obviously believes that Jesus has the divine power to effect a cure for his son. However, the mans belief has no yet reached the place where Jesus would want it because he obviously also believes that Jesus has to be physically present to cure his son and that death is irrevocable. Jesus shows the man his error, and he leaves convinced that his son is already well. A thorough examination of these two narratives, which are related in the fourth chapter of John, will demonstrate not only the particulars of these two stories, but will also indicate how these narratives are instructive for the present day Christian.
