various theories as to what Stonehenge is; this paper examines some of the conclusions that have been drawn. Discussion There are henges throughout England; according to the dictionary, the word
simply means a circular enclosure. But Stonehenge is the one that excites archeologists most, possibly because of the many mysteries surrounding it, as well as the fact that it is
so large and clearly defined; intact to the point that its original shape can be determined; and located so far from a source for the stone. Because there is
no real way to know Stonehenges purpose with absolute certainty, interesting theories have arisen. Some are still current, others have been discredited. One of the earliest was put forth by
John Aubrey in the 1600s; Aubrey believed Stonehenge to have been built by the Druids for use in their ceremonies (Culbreath, 2004). This particular theory has been both popular and
long-lasting; however, its completely inaccurate. Aubrey was writing before carbon dating and other scientific techniques were developed, and until these techniques were used, his theory seemed plausible. Now, however, because
of accuracy in dating the site, we know that the last of the stone circles was completed nearly 1500 years before the appearance of the Druids in about 300 BC
(Culbreath, 2004). Furthermore, the Druids are known to have conducted their rites in "sacred forest groves"; Culbreath says there is no evidence to suggest that they ever used the
stone rings for any of their ceremonies (2004). However, anyone who has been reading the news or watching TV lately will have seen a new "dig" at Stonehenge, and they
will also have seen a group of Druids giving their "blessing" to the endeavor. This theory, though inaccurate, retains a strong hold on the public imagination. The current research suggests
