The following examination of definitions of illness and healing looks at the lessons that can be learned from works of literature, each focusing on a different aspect of illness, death
and learning to live. Margaret Edsons play Wit concerns Vivian Bearing, a middle-aged scholar who has devoted her life to the study of John Donnes seventeenth century metaphysical poetry.
Edsons play, in particular, demonstrates how well-meaning doctors turn a patient into a thing, an object for study, in their determined efforts to root out the cause of disease and
expand the field of knowledge. This point is exemplified near the end of the play when Vivians heart stops beating. Her young doctor begins to revive her, despite the fact
that her chart reads DNR (do not resuscitate). Susie, her nurse who has always seen Vivian as a patient and a fellow human being, intervenes and shouts at the doctor
"Shes DNR!" (Edson 82). Jason, the doctor, responds "Shes Research!" (Edson 82). However, Jason eventually comes to his senses and honored Vivians last request. Throughout the play, Edson
shows how Vivian uses her poetry as a means for tenaciously clinging to her identity as a person. However, it also becomes clear that Vivians hard-lined, academic stance towards Donnes
poetry has robbed it of its spiritual meaning. Jason, who is also a former student of Vivians, comments that "Enzyme Kinetics (a course) was more poetic than Bearings class" (Edson
