work, Jordan becomes involved with a guerrilla group and becomes enamored of one of its members, Maria. Not only are the pair inextricable from the first day of meeting,
they seem to be in love. It is more than lust, although that is certainly a part of the equation. While the plot does focus on the love story, it
is more than that. This is a political novel and one that also centers around courage and duty. Jordans assignment is to blow up a bridge and in fact, much
of what occurs surrounds that mission. Once the bridge is blown up, one can say that it is anti-climatic and draws on the larger themes. Throughout the work, Jordan questions
why he is even fighting on the chosen side. It is not that he does not at all support the side, but the support is waning. The bridge however does
seem to mark Jordans fate. He is by accident injured and left to die. Maria must be comforted as she dos not want to leave the love of her life.
A sad tale, it is political as well. Entrenched in the 1930s during the rise of Naziism and while communism was still fresh in the minds of many leaders, this
work takes on many topics. One man struggles with his political ideals but in the process falls in love. One can say that when getting down to what is really
important, love supersedes all. Perhaps that is a quick and simplistic interpretation, but it is really one of many pertinent analyses of this classic piece of literature. In order to
