in an article, that for him there was a dual attraction to ballet. That is, ballet is both realistic and artificial at the same time. While an artists interpretation,
particularly one who lived in Paris during the height of its creative life, is interesting, it does suggest areas of inquisition in the study of dance. What is dance? Degass
interpretation or observations are important but in the observation that ballet is both real and artificial, a contradiction is revealed. Degas, while his object of affection was the image
of the ballet dancer, and he would capture this in his paintings, other artists have been enamored with dance too. There are vocal artists of today who incorporate dance into
their videos and use it on stage. Madonna, and Michael and Janet Jackson, are just a few pop stars who incorporate dance into their final interpretations of music. Duke Ellington
too adored dance. According to Carney, when Duke announced the term "dance" in his recitative, he actually meant to say "making love " (Willard 402). Of course, high society would
shun the dance to come from pop icons and jazz musicians and the likes of Bruce Springsteen who years ago danced on stage with the undiscovered Courtney Cox. But
