same way, but was expected. Burgoon also notes that expectancy violation theory hinges on the concept that human beings have free will, so that they can interpret interpersonal relationships in
such a way as to consciously decide whether or not to violate expectations and predict the outcome of so doing. This theory also assumes that there is a single truth,
which asserts that all communication activities subscribe to certain norms and when these are violated, it is possible to predict what the outcomes will be.
Chadwick (2003) states that social penetration theory is concerned with the dynamic changes which take place in interpersonal
relationships. Although in general terms one could say that in the course of a relationship developing, there is a gradual transition from public and formal interaction to a more personal
one, this does not mean that the relationship improves in a steady way as each person finds out more about the other. There will be various tensions and divergences which
are set up in the course of the development which have to be worked through, and the relationship will vary from open to closed and back to open again as
this dialectical interaction takes place and the individuals establish their respective positions in the relationship.
