often a network is compromised for no other reason than the challenge of breaking through or just for "fun". A
survey conducted last year by the Office of Strategic Crime Assessments & the Victoria (British Columbia) Police found that of the 308 companies surveyed (of which 51.3% responded):
? 37% had experienced some form of intrusion - 90% were internal attacks and 60% were external attacks. (A significant number
had experienced both internal and external attacks.) ? 95% had Internet access. Of these, only 43% had permanent connections: the remainder had
dial-up accounts. Of the attacks reported, almost 80% of these caused less than $10,000 in lost productivity/damages. However, six companies had incidents that cost more than $500,000 in damages
(www.camtech.net). How long might we guess that it would take a start-up company to make ten thousand dollars? Many companies have a small profit margin when they first begin
business, and few if any can afford an immediate loss of that nature. If anything, we know that companies often close during their first year due to a shortage
of capital caused by unplanned events. What is the old adage, about an ounce of prevention and the pound of cure? Something to the effect, it is more economically
wise to spend a few dollars now, than loose a large amount later. Some of the cautionary tale need not even cost dollars, but rather is the application of
