the current IPv4 which is now nearly 20 years old and facing many challenges. IPv6 has been under development for many years and the standard was set down by the
IEFT in 1998. One of the main problems that it addresses is the increasing use of the internet and the way the number of internet addresses is nearly at capacity
due to the increasing number of users (Hagen, 2002). In addition to the need for the provision of a greater number of IP addresses to cope with the growth IPv6
also has several improvements that were needed, such as improvements in routing as well as network configuration. The changeover to IPv6 is not going to occur overnight, it is
envisaged that the change over will take several years with both IPv4 and IPv6 co-existing for that period (Ixia, 2005). In some countries there has even been legislation for the
introduction of IPv6, such as Japan and China (Ixia, 2005). With this background we can look at some of the areas of improvement. The main area is that of the
IP addresses, the current IPv4 uses a 32 bit address space, but as time goes by this is increasingly stretched with the addition of many new devices such as PDAs
internet connected vehicles, wireless services and IP telephony. There had already been some moves undertaken to try and extend the use of IPv4 such as Network Address Translation (NAT) Classless
Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) (Ixia, 2005). However, these are temporary measures working around the problem rather than curing it. IPv6 is able to resolve this
issue and meet the needs of the peer to peer applications end to end architecture and the need to a system that can cope with the need for IP addresses
