The Internet is a hodge podge of data that is easily accessible with a few key strokes and while there are important things on the net, there is also a
slew of pornography. Pornography--a form that has been notoriously hard to describe--is ever-present and while the issue of censoring the Internet is rather laughable (as it is an impossibility) the
issue of censoring the Internet in public places like libraries is rather serious. It is a hot issue as the bold twenty-first century begins. Should libraries be allowed to censor
the Internet so that little children cannot have access to pornography in a building that is thought to be a safe refuge from the corrupt dominant media culture? Of
course, that question is emotionally charged. Certainly, no one wants little children viewing pornography and likely, they will not stumble upon pornography by accident. Of course, small children may have
heard the word sex and will put this into a browser window, but to get to explicit material, one likely has to know what they are doing. It often
does not just pop up by accident. It is of course possible for a teenager to stumble onto pornography innocently while writing a report on breast cancer. At the
same time, if the information were filtered, information on breast cancer would be banned as well. Critics of filtering do point out that such filters not only tread on first
amendment rights, but also that they truly truncate ones ability to do ordinary research. Anything with keywords like breast will be to some extent prohibited. If one is looking for
information on turkey breasts, breast cancer, breast feeding and so forth, choices will be limited or nonexistent. A pregnant woman should have the ability to go to the library and
