tell the kids they cant use the computer because Daddys got work to do, and you dont even have a job." These, among a list of many others, would
only be humorous to someone who recognizes the symptoms. While people joke about Internet addiction, according to Kimberly Young, the syndrome is real. Young conducted a three-year study of Internet
abuse and has heard many stories. In her 1998 book Caught in the Net, Young compares the addiction to others, such as alcoholism and gambling. Yet, while for example, alcoholism
is accepted as a medical problem today, other addictions are often mocked. It does seem that in todays society everything is labeled an addiction and that phenomenon has caused controversy.
In Im Dysfunctional, Youre Dysfunctional, Wendy Kaminer lashes out at a society that labels everything a disease, thereby rendering the perpetrator of any act, a victim as opposed to a
human being with free will. She attacks the successful twelve step programs by suggesting that they create dependency rather than strength. While it may be true that such programs, and
many therapists as well, are labeling acts of free will as diseases or disorders, in looking at the addiction paradigm, if accepted, would have include the Internet under that umbrella.
In other words, if one were to accept the concept of addiction, and the many addictions that plague contemporary society, one would have to render Internet addiction as valid.
