Womens issues are international in their scope. Even seemingly diverse populations suffer from the same injustices in regard to womens equality. They may differ in the degree to which those problems are being addressed but often it is the same root causes to which the problems can be traced. No better examples stand in testament to this fact than those that exist in India and the United States. While Indian women often differ from American women in many respects, they also share many similarities. They share, in fact, many of the hardships and injustices which face all women on an international scale. While women in more industrialized countries like the United States are slowly gaining a toe hold in terms of societal equality, other women around the world are far too often being held hostage in societal positions which are inferior to men (Marger, 1999). The differences between the roles and responsibilities of men and women are great, even in the more progressive countries like the United States. In lesser developed countries, however, these differences are sometimes phenomenal (Marger, 1999). In the United States cultural values, whether subtle or obvious, affect much of what we do and perceive as a people. This is true in India as well. These values affect how we make decisions; how we manage our resources, our businesses, and our personal lives (Cherlin, 1998). Cultural values also affect interpersonal trust and relationships on both a personal and professional level.
