In Russia we may argue that the trade patterns may be seen as constant with that of a developing capitalist economy, where the source and type of funding and trading relationship have to adapt at a speedy rate. The GDP of the country is $1.12 trillion, with exports amounting to 105.1 billion and imports to $44.2 billion the amount of trade that is undertaken may be seen as sizeable as well as growing (CIA, 2002). The main export trading partners are US taking 8.8% of the exports, Germany taking 8.5% of the exports, Ukraine with 6.5%, Belarus with 5.1%, Italy with 5% and the Netherlands with 4.8% (CIA, 2002). In terms of imports the main trading partners are Germany providing 13.8% of imports, Belarus providing 10.7%, Ukraine providing 8.3%, US providing 7.9%, Kazakhstan providing 4.6% and Italy providing 3.8% (CIA, 2002). When we look at these trading partners there are similarities, with both Germany and the US, two major economies, playing an important role. In this economy we may argue that as a result of the destabilisation as a result of the fall of communism that the economy appears to relying very heavily on international trade, and that the trading partners are those best equipped to deal with the barriers to trade. In terms of the US and Germany, the relatively small amount of trade in terms of their own economy, and are the stronger economies that may also be able to cope with the instability in Russia best.
