since the late 1800s. "As a working peoples celebration its origins go back much further, with connections to Ancient Roman rituals" (Towart, 2000). In European pagan times it was a
holy day, the first day of spring planting (Towart, 2000). As can be seen, this ancient tradition is rich in history, though it is more commonly associated with workers and
workers rights today. It serves as a very strong foundation for international solidarity as well. The following paper examines the history and significance of Mayday, aspects of international solidarity and
the labor movement today. Mayday As mentioned in the introduction, Mayday began long ago, and in more recent times, in the
1700s, it started to become something of a political and social reality. It was in the 1700s that the Churches essentially outlawed all pagan rituals "just as bosses today want
workers to forget any traditions of solidarity and celebration of workers rights, but many peasants continued the tradition" (Towart, 2000). As a result of the banning state and church were
often the butt of jokes at many Mayday celebrations which "certainly did not endear the craft guilds and others, who organised celebrations, to the authorities" (Towart, 2000).
Today Mayday is more aggressively connected to struggles of the working class individuals in Chicago back in 1886 (Towart, 2000). After the Civil War many
workers began struggling for an 8 hour day (Towart, 2000). A historic strike took place on May 1st in that same year and it was considered a strong indication of
