the study of the way in which nations relate to one another. This paper examines several theories of international relations, including constructivism and neorealism, and how they relate to one
another. Discussion The theories that have been gathered under the collective name "international relations" are many and varied. They include the "balance of power theory," the theory of "collective defense,"
the "complex interdependence theory," "deterrence theory" and "game theory" among others (Beavis, 2007). If we look briefly at each of these theories we can see what they are and how
constructivism might impact them. The "balance of power" theory says that when there are changes in the international status, particularly when one country tries to conquer territory, there will be
immediate and "counterbalancing" actions on the part of other countries which will help to "maintain the stability of relations between states" (Beavis, 2007). "Collective defense" is the term that describes
the relatively simple idea that an attack on one nation that is allied with others is an attack on all, and they agree that if one nation is attacked, each
of them will have the right to exercise "individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations" (Beavis, 2007). The "complex interdependence theory" reminds
us that the relationships among nations are very complex, and include not only military and political relations, but economic and diplomatic ones-and many others as well (Beavis, 2007). The theory
speaks to the idea that as military engagements among nations have lessened, economic relations have become more important; the idea is always to maintain a balance (Beavis, 2007). The idea
