as important when looking at world events. Events such as responses to a political uprising in a remote nation state such as those seen in the Middle East in 2011,
trade agreements such as the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) which has been evolving since its original inception1 or a trade dispute, such as those seen between the
US and China regarding cheap imports into the US will reflect the international relationship status between nations. In the past events such as the Cold War and the arms race
were also manifestations of the international relationships at the time. To appreciate the study of international relations and international relations theory, and how it may add to understanding of these
international events, it is necessary to first define the concept of international relations theory and then consider some of the models within the theory. The paper will look at two
of the most important paradigms; realism and liberalism. There is no singular definition of international relations theory. Brown and Ainley (2009, p1) note that different theorists and theories approach
the study from different perspectives. In some context it may refer to the diplomatic and strategic relations that take place between states which may be argued as more closely aligned
with realism. Others see it in terms of cross board transactions, which include different types of transactions, including but not limited to social, economic and political transactions which is more
closely aligned with liberalism (Brown and Ainley, 2009, p1). In this latter application there may be less focus on the nation states, with the emphasis the cross boarder nature of
the relationships, which increasing incorporates translational/international organizations, such as the United Nations and the way globalization takes place (Brown and Ainley, 2009, p1). When looking at the models it
