influences they exert will be on both the member states and the external actors. If we look at two influential organisations we can see how they impact and influence international
relations. The European Union and the United Nations are both powerful organisation and their influence is felt widely. The European Union The
original purpose if the European Union was to introduce a trading block with common interests to cement the peace which had been formed in Europe after the Second World War.
In essence, the European Union was created to promote the interests of the individuals within the member nations that could not be advanced at equal levels by the singular actions
of these countries (Palmer, 1967). This was the aim to create a union which would prevent war again in the future. The European Union developed as an essential extension of
actions beginning with the Marshall Plan of 1948, following the end of the Second World War. The plan, which moved European countries into unifying action and called for the reduction
of trade barriers, tariffs and the implementation of currency controls, was hoped to demonstrate the effectiveness of a free European internal market (Palmer and Colton, 1969). Where countries had interdependent
financial markets there was a lower possibility of war and trade could achieve what diplomacy had failed to achieve. The result of this plan was the treaty of
Paris which was signed in 1951 and created the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) its members were France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. From the ECSC
