The purpose of marketing, of course, is to increase sales of goods and services. International marketing continues to grow in stature and practice with increasing globalization, and as such,
directly contributes to increased and freer trade among nations. Those not opposed to the ideology of capitalism are fully cognizant of the benefits
of free - or at least freer - trade. Those developing nations that have embraced freer trade throughout the latter part of the 20th century are far more prosperous
now than are those nations with which they originally were equal but chose to retain protectionist, isolationist policies. Those developing nations that have been successful also have seen the
standard of living for their people increase dramatically over the past few decades. ASEAN and NAFTA Singapores economic status in the 1960s was
similar to that of Nepals in the 1960s. The difference between them now is that Singapore is a mature economy and Nepals economic condition is worse now than it
was 35 years ago. The only other difference is that Singapore set out to make systemic and systematic changes in its economy and its historical bent toward isolationism while
Nepal did not. In 2003, there are still areas of Nepal that are not open to foreign visitors. The government has thoughtfully
advanced the economic standing of the country and therefore the countrys people with each successive five-year plan since the first in 1960. Though it is a member of ASEAN
(Association of Southeast Asian Nations) that also has been adversely affected by the Asian currency crisis, the country has consistently been maligned for all the years of rapid economic expansion
