will have an impact, however, there are less tangible influences that can be more important. A major influence will be the culture;
Hofestede developed a model that is useful for looking at these divergences (Sparrow and Marchington, 1998). Hofesede defined culture as "the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members
of one group or category of people from another" (Hofstede, 2003). In the original model Hofstede identified four different dimensions; these were power distance, individualism /collectivism, masculinity/femininity and uncertainty avoidance.
These are also added to with the later classification of long term orientation. Each of these can have an impact on the way labour relations takes place in different cultures.
Hofstede defines power distance as the "extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and
accept that power is distributed unequally" (Hofstede, 2003). This is not a concept that is limited to the workplace, but can be seen n many other areas, such as in
schools or social hierarchies. The level of distance between those with power and those lower in the hierarchy is a key factor in the way communications and negation needs to
take place. Power distance is a reflection of the authority perceptions in the employee relationship (Wickham 1998). The social attitudes are a direct reflection of the cultural environment in which
