would be restored. That is, there had been a lot of talk that the United States had been engaged in torture at prison sites like Guantanamo Bay, also known as
Gitmo, and so there was a sense that the U.S. was going in the wrong direction. Not only that, but it seems as if the U.S. might be in violation
of the Geneva Conventions. Of course, much is subject to interpretation, and also, there is a sense that many ordinary rules are ignored because since 9/11 with the passage of
the Patriot Act, old rules do not apply. Again, the topic is controversial. There had been a sense that in order to win the War on Terror, the U.S. had
to abide its own law, and torture might be necessary. On the other hand, some people would protest against such notions, vying for the old rules and claiming that the
new order of the world is no excuse for egregious behavior. It is clear that not everyone agreed with the new ideology. While it may be true that when George
Bush stood at Ground Zero a day or two after more than three thousand Americans were killed on their own turf, and said that the people who did this would
hear us soon, the people applauded, but that resolve faded over time. After years of nothing more occurring, things would get back to normal. Soon, the torture that was used
perhaps in the early days began to make the United States look bad. Was the U.S. in violation of the Geneva Conventions? Is Gitmo really all that bad? In exploring
these and other issues regarding the treatment of prisoners, the Geneva Conventions, and international humanitarian law, there is much to discuss. Is IHL still a driving force in the world,
