because the companies to whom they outsource have young children working in the factories. Many people may remember the Kathie Lee Gifford sweat shop conditions in the offshore factories making
that brand. Before that, there was a Nike scandal but because of Kathie Lees celebrity status, her case was far more publicized. These were resolved but it is hard for
people to forget the horrid conditions under which children and women were working. About 18 months after Giffords situation, other major companies were identified as contracting with sweatshops. Some of
those included Wal-Mart, K-Mart and JC Penney (Ewald, 1997). Besides earning pennies, workers were abused in all ways and treated as though they were in prison. These horrible conditions are
not uncommon, especially in developing countries. There is a very different moral code and historic practices that are hard to fight. De George (2006) reports that developed and prosperous countries
maintain their economic and political power by exploiting workers in undeveloped or poor countries. This author also points out that America and other Western countries have background institutions for business,
like unions, interest groups and even laws that undeveloped countries do not have (De George, 2006). This makes a huge difference in how workers are treated across the globe. What
is acceptable in one country, such as children working in a factory, is not acceptable in another country. We should remember that children filled the factory floors when industrialization
