The ability to offer a no frills service which focuses on a fast turnaround of aircraft keeping the aircraft in the air for longer increased the leverage of the assets and allows the company to sell seats that offer a high level of value for the customers. This has lead to 35 consecutive years of profit for the firm (Soutwest, 2007). This is during times when many other airlines have faced difficulties as a result of 9/11 including bankruptcy for several airlines, such as Delta. Therefore, the low cost model with a high level of asset utilizations may be seen as a major strength. 2. The aircraft fleet that the airline uses are also a strength. With a large number of flights southwest uses a fleet of 375 Boeing 737s. With a fleet made up of only a single type of aircraft this reduces the overall maintenance costs and the level of parts and skills required to maintain their fleet. In addition to the lower running costs of the fleet the airline also has one of the shortest turnaround times in the industry meaning that the aircraft remain in the air for a much greater proportion of the time compared to its competitors. This also helps Southwest airlines retain a position where it has the lowest running costs per seat which are between 15% and 25% below that of its competition (Southwest, 2007). However, thisis also a potential source fo weakness. If there are any issues with the performance of the 737 aircraft, or any issues concerning the supply of parts of the aircraft then Southwest may face difficulties in keeping all their aircraft in the air.
